How ripe are the avocados when you ship them?
Interesting fact: Avocados do not ripen on the tree. The fruit only begins ripening after being harvested. Your avocados will be shipped hours after being picked and will ripen nicely after you receive them.
What is the best way to prevent my avocados from spoiling once I receive them?
Each shipment is freshly picked and carefully packed to arrive close to perfect ripeness. When you receive your box, remove the avocados and inspect them for softness. To slow ripening, store firmer fruit in the refrigerator and keep the ones you plan to eat first on the counter. Once an avocado gives slightly to gentle pressure, it’s ready to enjoy within a day or two. If you need to store a cut avocado, brush the exposed flesh with lemon or lime juice, cover tightly, and refrigerate.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is calculated based on your location and the items in your order. You will always know the shipping price before you purchase.
Will all my avocados come from my adopted tree?
We will make every effort to harvest your avocados directly from your adopted tree. However, since farming depends on weather, water, and natural factors beyond our control, your shipment may occasionally include avocados from other trees on the same ranch. These are always grown under the same organic, regenerative practices and from the same grove as your tree.
Will my avocados be “gassed” or sprayed in order to preserve them?
No. Your avocados are never artificially ripened (“gassed”) or chemically treated. Every avocado we ship is handled using organic, food-safe methods. We rely on proper harvest timing to maintain freshness.
Will I be provided a tracking number for my avocado shipment?
Yes. Once your avocados are packed and shipped, you’ll receive an email with a tracking number from our carrier (USPS or UPS). You can use this to follow your shipment from our ranch to your doorstep.
How do I access my digital adoption certificate?
You’ll receive a personalized link to a Google Drive folder containing your digital Certificate of Adoption in several shareable formats. These are designed so you can easily post them to social media, include them in your email signature, or print them as a keepsake. Your certificate connects you to your adopted tree and celebrates your contribution to supporting local farms in San Diego County.
When will my avocados be hand harvested?
Our avocado harvest season runs from late January through mid-March, when Hass avocados are naturally at their best. Shipments begin as soon as the fruit reaches optimal maturity. You’ll receive an update before your box ships so you know when to expect your delivery.
How long does my tree adoption last?
Your adoption lasts for one full year from the date you adopt your tree. During that year, you’ll receive updates about your tree’s growth, farm happenings and your annual shipment of farm-direct avocados.
Is my adoption tax deductible?
Yes. Heal the Earth is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so a portion of your adoption is tax deductible. The deductible amount is calculated by subtracting the fair market value of the avocados and shipping from your adoption.
We will provide a receipt indicating the portion of your contribution that is tax deductible for your records.
